My most recent blog tour book is Skid by Rene Gutteridge. I was first introduced to books by Gutteridge when I reviewed Boo Humbug earlier this year. Skid, while not dealing with the town and characters of the Boo series, still has a familiar feel to it - which is something I enjoy. I like to be able to tell what author I'm reading as I go through books, whether or not the books themselves are related. And what's fun about Gutteridge's voice is that it's friendly. You really feel as if you're sitting down and being told a story.
I think that Skid is the third in a series - but I'm not positive. On one hand, that's excellent because it means the book does well and truly stand on its own. On the other hand, I need to find out because if there are more stories floating around out there about the Hazard family, then I need to read them!
What I liked best about this book is that there were some laugh out loud moments and some poignant ones and some tense ones and they were all mixed up and flowed naturally from one to the next. The story follows Hank Hazard as he begins his new job as a "secret customer" for an airline - hired by the airline - with instructions to be high maintenance to see why they're continuing to lose business. What follows is a comedy of errors surrounding stolen diamonds, a criminal extradition, a misogynist who takes great joy in tormenting the flight attendants, a recently jilted young lady, her ex, his new girlfriend, a companion pig, and a heist. And throughout it all, Hank provides a clear demonstration of Christ in action to all his fellow passengers (and anyone reading) without getting preachy or seeming forced.
The book was, in a word, delightful.
