I have decided that we, as a generic culture, have become obsessed with laziness. And we couch it in terms of being busy. What has pushed me over the edge today? The fact that here in our office building, they have a car wash and interior detailing service that comes to you. So while you sit up in your office, busily blogging away and trying to look busy - even though you really don't have all that much to do (and you desperately hope no one figures that out and actually GIVES you stuff to do) - they will be down in the bottom level of the parking garage washing your car and cleaning up the inside. This accomplishes a number of things for the overworked American.
#1) You don't have to go outside on a pretty, sunny Saturday and spend an hour or two with your spouse/kids/dogs/self washing your car and enjoying the general nice-ness of being outside.
#2) While not being out, exposed to all that harmful nature, you also won't be working your lazy arm muscles by scrubbing your car
#3) You never really have to throw out anything that's in your car - because they'll take care of it for you. Just drop the hamburger wrapper, fries box, and half-empty ketchup packets onto the floorboards and let them rot til someone else cleans up after you.
And all this can be taken care of for you by a company whose motto is "Life looks a whole lot better from a shiny car." Why does life look better from a shiny car? What is it about the shiny factor of your car that improves your life?
