Daylight Shavings Time

I hate losing an hour every spring. It just seems...wrong. Very, very wrong. And I'm not really convinced that it's actually doing what they hoped (e.g. conserving fuel used to generate electricity). Cause here I sit, 6pm, still plenty of light outside, with the light on in the office because it's in the basement and (to be brutally honest) I'm too lazy to go open the vertical blinds on the window.

Since (you may have noticed by the new blogroll in the sidebar) I'm participating in the Gathering of the Blogs this year (in honor of April 6th - Tartan Day), so there will be posts having to do with the wonder of all things Scottish this week. In keeping with that, I was curious if Scotland participated in daylight shavings.

They do.

What's cool about it though, is they call it Summer Time. So during the fall and winter they're on British Time and in the spring and summer, Summer Time. It's also interesting to note that they begin Summer Time on the last Sunday of March (vs. the first Sunday of April.) The end date seems to be pretty standard across the board.

So there you have it, fascinating facts about Scotland and daylight shavings time. I'll try to do something less lame tomorrow.

Interesting DST websites here and here. Though of course my favorite explanation of this history is from the movie National Treasure. ("What? You don't know this? Is this how you feel all the time?")

This is the first year that I didn't mind Spring Ahead. My daughter had been waking up at 5:15 every morning--including weekends (groan!) and waking us up. The Spring Ahead messed her up and she is now sleeping again. Thank goodness!

  2. Yay for sleep! I'm glad it helped someone out. :) I have a feeling I'm going to spend today in a fog. I'm not sure that's totally a bad thing though as the witch trials begin today here at the office.

Altho I am not Scotish (I have looked and looked in vain effort), I love all things Scotish. Ever read Diana Gabaldon? My most favority author. I'll have to visit all those blogs. Didn't know you were Scotish...very cool Beth. You've moved another notch in my coolness view of you! :)

  4. Uhoh. I'm probably going to slip a few notches in cool today as I'm planning a review of the first Gabaldon book and well...not in my top 9,000,000 favorite authors. :(

I realize I hate DLT, too! I couldn't sleep till 1.30 am, and had a helluva hard time getting my butt out of my bed this morning... It doesn't help that it's Monday. Aaaargh!
