My sister had to put her dog down today. He was only 10. In January he started having problems with incontinence - and the doctors looked and didn't see anything immediate so they gave him antibiotics that didn't seem to do anything and my sister put him in diapers. But then it started to turn pink with blood. So after a few other tries, they sedated him for an ultrasound and found bladder cancer. Inoperable and fatal.
That was last week.
My sister and her husband were just going to make him comfortable and let nature take its course. But he stopped eating. And he was clearly in pain despite their best efforts. And everything that came out of him was filled with blood. So the heartbreaking decision was made and now it's done.
He was a companion for her through some of her lowest days. He was their child for many years (and those of you with kids...you might not understand that, but there's no other way to describe it.) He was a playmate for my girls. He was a special puppy who was well loved and will be sorely missed.

I hate hearing that. Our babies are our animals and that is the hardest thing to do. My heart goes out to them and I'll say a little prayer for them too.
ReplyDeleteVery sad news. =(
ReplyDeleteEuthanasia-the last greatest kindness...when we take our pets pain and trade it for our own.
ReplyDeletePets are family.
I'm sorry for your sister and family.
:-(
Awww, I'm very sad to hear about this. Give your sister a hug. That is such a hard thing to do.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear this as I know the backstory to getting the dog in the first place as you alluded to in your post. lgp
ReplyDeleteMe three!
ReplyDeleteThanks, guys.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's doing as well as one could hope. I was over today and it was just sad to not have him barking at all the noise I was making (finishing up laying the tile in the powder room.)
So sad to hear that. :( Doggies are very special.
ReplyDeletePrayers for your Sister and her Husband that one day, soon, they will think of their "Baby" and smile at the joy they were blessed with for ten short years.
ReplyDeleteHaving gone thru the exact same experience - bladder cancer [TCC] with our beloved Baby, Sergeant, when he was nine years old, I am all too familiar with the grief they are experiencing right now.
I will keep your Sister and her Husband in my thoughts...
