Michelle has tagged me for this, and it seems like a good way to wind up the Friday Frivolity. So, without further ado, 5 things:
- In Jr High/High School, I qualified as a Junior Olympics sharpshooter in both riflery and archery.
- I wanted to be a vetrinarian for the longest time, until I realized that I wouldn't be able to handle being around sick animals, it makes me too sad. Well that and I really didn't like biology.
- I've been to Space Academy.
- I saw Lance Guest in a play as a kid and got his autograph on my copy of The Last Starfighter. He seemed embarassed to be remembered for that role, but he was very nice and chatted with us for a while after the show. (All the actors came out into the audience and shook hands, etc. It was cool.)
- I've had the rules explained a zillion times, but I still don't understand how football is played (other than the 6 points for a touchdown plus 1 for a field goal - I get that much.)
That's pretty much all you need to "know" about football. ;-)
ReplyDeleteEric, now I'm panicked, is that wrong? It's just a really, really good thing that Tim is not into sports. OTOH, my keen grasp of sports-related rules (cause it's not juts football) made me a real popular choice in HS PE class. Or not.
ReplyDeleteGwynne - thanks for the validation! :) Though Eric's got me wondering if I need to go look it up.
I think it's 3 points for a field goal, but you know what would be fun is if we put our heads together and posted all the "rules" as we "know" them because I would just about bet money that 3 is not the right answer either. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I meant to ask, did they really let you shoot rifles at your school?! We nearly killed each other with the bows and arrows! I loved archery.
So I asked Tim about the field goal thing and he just rolled his eyes and said it depended. So I'm already lost. I do agree, Gwynne, it might be entertaining to post the rules as we know them - hey, maybe we could make up our own game ala Calvin Ball. :)
ReplyDeleteWasn't at school, was at camp. You can get away with a lot more at camp, but they were also only bb guns, so it's not like they were real bullets (though I do just as well with real ammo.)
You've been to Space Academy?
ReplyDeleteWas it cool?
Hang on there, beth... the intro riflery classes were indeed bb guns, but the higher level classes (where we qualified for Junior Olympics) were .22 caliber rifles!
ReplyDeleteLynellen, really? Hrm. I didn't remember firing real ammo in that situation.
ReplyDeleteJim - Space Academy rocked. Words can't begin to describe how totally awesome of an experience it was. :)
For the record, after every touchdown (6 points), the team that scored has an opportunity for an extra point, by kicking it through the uprights at close range. (They have the option of "going for two", which means they essentially try to score a second touchdown by running or passing the ball into the endzone. Since it's riskier, it's typically only attempted in the fourth quarter, and only when that extra-extra point would make a big difference.)
ReplyDeleteA field goal is attempted when the team on offense has run out of downs (a.k.a. attempts to sufficiently advance the ball), but rather than punt and give the ball to the other team, if they're close enough, they can try to kick it between the uprights from where they are. If they're successful, they get 3 points.
The weird thing is, I mix with sports about as well as you do. Yet football is the one sport I'll actually watch an entire game of on TV--probably because of its complexity and unpredictability.
Thanks, Matt. Though of course, that information will stick with me probably for about the next 10 minutes. At which point it will float away to the brain of someone else and I will go back to football cluelessness. :)
ReplyDelete1. Sweet! I did shotput and discus!
ReplyDelete2. Agreed - way too sad - plus Cat would kill me - I would want to bring any stray home that i could!
3. Beth! We need more POWER!
4. Wayyy cool! Gotta see that!
5. WORRY YE NOT! You will learn by next year! You have no choice! I expext u and Tim to be with the family as i play!
I knew about Space Academy, but I didn't know about the rifle/archery sharpshooting. Very cool! I chaperoned a 4-H field trip once and my kids egged me on to try the archery. By dumb luck, I hit the bulls-eye. Their mouths dropped open and they looked upon me like Archery Goddess. I didn't tell them that I'd never done that before! :)
