Quiet Mornings

We're gradually hitting a bit of a weekday routine around here, and while exhausted, I'm feeling better just knowing how I can go through my day and do more than feed and change the baby. The key, it seems, is to sacrifice a little sleep in the morning and try to take a nap in the afternoon.

Baby boy has been doing really well in the nights lately, averaging 3 or 3.5 hours between needing to eat. Since we tend to put him down around 10:30 or 11, this means I only really have to get up twice at night. Then, in keeping with the new routine, the third time I get up (usually around 7 or 7:30), I feed him, change him, rock him back to sleep and then go get in the shower. It's the only way I can guarantee I'll get a shower, so it's probably worth it. It also means I get a little bit of time in the morning to do things (fun things like wash bottles or scrub a toilet!) before needing to put him into the Snuggli to maintain peace and harmony throughout our little world. Once he's up and in the Snuggli I try to avoid working with super hot water or things like bleach. Call me nuts, but I just don't think he needs to run the risk of having either accidentally splashed on him.

This morning I forgot to sneak the bottles from overnight out of his room when I left, so there aren't any to wash up. I'm actually about where I want to be in my house cleaning for the week. And I am not awake enough to be working on my dissertation yet. Thus this rather random blog entry.

It's kind of pleasant to sit in the basement at my computer and look out into the morning light in the back yard with coffee at my right and Cassi at my feet and the only sound from the baby monitor a quiet hum indicating that it's working.

  1. You're hitting the sweet spot - when your routine is becoming clear and the crazy newness of it all fades.

And then something will change to disrupt it all over again. The joys of parenting.

I've learned to let go of my daily shower and also some housekeeping. Some things are a little more important at times.

So glad to hear you're doing well. Now go take a nap. =)
