Notes from the TV

A few thoughts on various and sundry TV shows I've been watching of late. There may be slight spoilers if you're a week (or more) behind. You've been warned.

America's Next Top Model
Is anyone else struggling to find anyone worth rooting for in this competition? I like Katarzhena (or however you spell it) and like Whitney just from the aspect that she's a size 10 and made it to the foreign location. You go, girl! But still, in reality, no "normal" white girl is ever going to win ANTM - and both of them fall into that category. I seriously dislike Fatima and Dominique and want both of them to go home now. Realistically, one of the two of them will be the winner. I just wish they'd stop toying with me and pretending that Fatima might go home, cause I get my hopes up and then *bam*, she's still there.

Top Chef
We're finally whittling down enough competitors that it's getting more interesting. I really have a tough time when there are so many contestants that they speed through the tasting showing snippets and sometimes skipping dishes all together. No favorites, yet, though I do like the gastronomical chemist or whatever he calls himself. It's good to do weird things with food!

Hell's Kitchen
I'm about ready to stop watching. The contestants this go-round seem, if you'll excuse it, hell bent on turning this into Survivor: Kitchen Island. They're not focusing on the food at all. They're not focusing on the fact that a kitchen team needs to be a team, especially at this stage of the game. The fact that the first chick to nominate people did her nominations for "strategic reasons" is idiotic. Ramsay seems to be losing patience with it as well, but at the same time, he feeds it somewhat by being the over the top person that he is. Still, I miss the past couple seasons where the focus was really more on service and food than on "winning a competition". At this point, if I was Gordon Ramsay, I'd be terrified. Because there's no one on the show who deserves the prize - and in fact, I don't think they want the prize other than to be able to say they won it.

Last Restaurant Standing
I'm serious stoked with the last three teams and am excited to see how it goes. I still want the twins to win, but I'd be ok with either of the other two as they've proven time and again that they could hack it.

New Amsterdam
I was skeptical of this show, honestly. But having watched it, I'm actually hoping they bring it back for another season. I like the fact that (spoiler coming) it turns out the doctor isn't the woman who's going to break the curse. So that aspect of the plot is still alive and well - and it's a pretty fun police procedural on top of it.

Burn Notice
No new episodes yet, but it's coming and I can't wait!

Um, Nicole, Cycle 5? Caridee, Cycle 7?

  2. Do they qualify as normal? In the back of my mind they were both kind of odd - but maybe I'm not remembering right.

  3. Well, "normal" is in the eye of the beholder. I mean, Nicole was a little prissy, and Caridee a little wacky, but overall... I mean, as far as ANTM contestants go, they're as normal as they come.

Given the context, I thought you might have been contrasting "normal" with "plus-size" (a.k.a. "normal" in the real world).

  4. I only watch two of these. Hell's Kitchen and we just started watching New Amsterdam. That being said I agree with both comments you said about them. I think we could really get into New Amsterdam and as for as HK goes...to be honest if I had the chance to eat at the resturant that they are over...I'd have to pass. Unless of course Gordan Ramsay is there then I'd like the table closest to him. Don't know why but I just love him :)
