Random Miscellany

This likely falls into the ever-so-exciting category of a weekend wrap-up. Made even more exciting by the content of said weekend.

The dinner on Friday went more smoothly than the last several years. I'm not sure what made the difference, but even the glut of last minute reservations and people who just walked in who were convinced, by golly, that they'd called in and offended, let me tell you, that they didn't have a pre-printed name tag (because they weren't on the list of people who actually made a reservation in time) couldn't make it unpleasant. If only they all ran like that.

Saturday Tim finished fixing the lamp post by the driveway. The thing has been non-functional for the better part of the last...two years? And it's been something that we've tried to fix off and on for that time, until he finally decided that the whole thing would have to be ripped out in order to find the problem. And in fact when he got it ripped out two weeks ago, he found that the wire had been nicked. Not sure how, but there you are. Add to that the fact that there was no conduit - just happy little wire buried under ground and, well, he was less than blessed. So he fixed the nick and lo the light did shine. Of course, then he wanted to let it sit for a while to make sure that really fixed the glitch. So for a week we had a light in a bucket by our driveway. But hey, at least the cars weren't up on blocks. Finally, having decided that yes it was in fact fixed, Tim bought a new post (the other was irretrievably wounded in the disassembly of the prior version) and a new lamp (because the other was ugly and he wasn't convinced that it wasn't also faulty) and now I have a pretty new lamp by the driveway. (If you look at it from a certain angle, you'll also notice that despite our best effort, it is slightly askew, but such is life.)

Sunday we lazed and did much playing with the baby. Because it's important to demonstrate the various block stacking techniques. (He's got knocking them down as an innate skill, apparently.)

Beyond all that, I'm seriously pleased that the new TV season is starting soon. It's been dry around here for a bit and the DVR is looking seriously anemic. Of course, the networks all seemed to get greedy and Monday at 8 is causing a big of a problem as that's Chuck, Big Bang Theory, and Sarah Connor Chronicles. The DVR records only two shows. I'm trying to get my sister into Chuck with the thought that they could record it and then we'd have a weekly appointment to watch it together. Until then, Sarah Connor is getting the short end of the stick, because I choose funny (Big Bang and we're going ahead and trying How I Met Your Mother thereafter) over slightly wooden and unemotional scifi-drama any day. Tim mostly agrees, but he really likes Sarah Connor Chrons (I'm guessing because of Miss Glau, but whatever). Chuck was never up for negotiation as we both enjoy it. Other than those, there haven't appeared to be any looming conflicts. So that's nice.

Is anyone actually trying any of the (meager selection of) new series? I looked them over, but couldn't see anything that I just had to sample.

  1. I watch way too much reality tv. I should probably try some new shows, but then I'd get hooked and want to watch them instead of DVRing them.

  2. Michelle, having scoffed at reality tv for many years, I'm sad to say that I'm way overhooked myself. On the other hand, The Amazing Race starts Sunday and I'm totally stoked.
