Starbucks has started putting quotes and other such wisdom tidbits on the outsides of the coffee cups. (This has been going on for a bit and I've noticed them before, just never really been struck, like I was today.) Today I happened to get, along with my dose of happiness, "The Way I see It #23" which is by David Cross -- who is apparantly a comedian, writer and actor. I've never heard of him.
Regardless, his thoughts are interesting food for thought to accompany your coffee. He says, "Chances are you are scared of fictions. Chances are you are only fleetingly happy. Chances are you know much less than you think you do. Chances are you feel a little guilty. Chances are you want people to lie to you. Perhaps the answer lies on the side of a coffee cup. You are lost."
I don't know that I'm scared of fiction. I do know I don't want people to lie to me. The others, well they're interesting food for thought. I think happiness is fleeting - the nice thing about that though is that while it flits out of your life, it also can whimsically flit right back in. Sometimes before you realize that it flitted out in the first place. I know I know less than I think I do. But I still know I know more than other people I know who are sure they know more than I know but really know quite a bit less.
And then, as your brain ponders the thoughts expressed on the cup, your eyes wander down to: "This is the author's opinion, not necessarily that of Starbucks."
Why must we put disclaimers on everything? Would someone really sue because they didn't like the quip that was on the side of the cup they're going to toss in the trash in the next hour? Well, yeah I guess they would. After all, 180 degrees from that disclaimer they have a warning about the fact that your hot beverage (in its insulated paper cup with bio-friendly hand protecting sleeve) is hot.
I should go...but before that, I think you should all know: No animals were harmed in the making of this blog.

oh come on. happiness is a choice, which most people choose to ignore.
ReplyDeleteyou know some people who choose to be unhappy no matter what. i hear rumors that occassionally the opposite is true as well.
