My favorite radio station apparently went off the air yesterday. My second favorite station went off the air last year. And they do it with no fanfare, no announcements, no warnings - just BOOM. I turned on the station this morning and it was playing classical music. I had the classical station on my presets anyway, but ...sometimes you just want regular music. Plus, they had the most normal, unoffensive but interesting/funny morning DJs. The other stations left are manned by a geezer that's been hosting the radio show since I was 11 (and I didn't really like him/think he was funny then...and now he has this harem of co-hosts, all of whom are just, well vile is the word that comes to mind), a relatively new "modern music" station, but they pretty much only play hip-hop type stuff, and the alternative rock station. I like the alternative rock station when they play music, but their morning guy is foul beyond belief and I just won't listen to him, besides which they play like maybe one song an hour in the a.m. - so you can listen to more of this guy being disgusting. And his laugh. Gag. It's like a donkey on cocaine, braying.
The other station left (besides classical, news, etc.) that plays "top 40" type music is good, the DJs are ok, mostly funny, but they seem to play a bazillion commercials during drive time so it's like song, commercials for 5 minutes, traffic, commercials for 5 minutes, song, dj banter, commercials, traffic...you get the idea. Add that to the fact that it's a station from about 40 miles south of me, so by the time I get to work (about 40 miles north of me), there's barely any reception.
I just want to hear music and traffic. Apparantly that, and my desire to know WHY they went off the air, is too much to ask. At least I can solve the lack of good morning entertainment with CDs and occasional switches to the news/talk station when they do traffic (which at least is predictable if you set your clock to theirs.) But answer this: Where am I going to get all my Hollywood gossip now?

I guess you'll have to read gossip for yourself at MSN or at Yahoo.
ReplyDeleteThe piece you're missing here is that News Channel 8 had a story on this whole switcheroo. WTOP moved from the AM band onto the 103.5 spot, which is where teh classical was.
Maybe you can get your hubbie to spring for XM satelite radio. :) Cuz you need another way to burn cash, right??
That happened to me a couple years ago. We had this really great station that played all 80's music. Then one day, I turned it on and it was Mexican music. I didn't even know that station was switching. Just like you said, no notice, no fanfare, just "switch". I think it would be nice to have a little warning. Like a week in advance so I can gradually get used to the other presets on my radio. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you still listened to the radio. Why hasn't your husband bought you a FM modulator for your iPod?
