One day down, only 3 to go. The hotel is growing on me (and not in a bad way - no molds or anything), it certainly looks better in the light of day than it did last night with low blood sugar and travel fatigue. It's certainly still not the Hampton Inn, and it's still kind of skeezy but...I should survive the experience.
The soap here made me hungry. No, I didn't eat it, but there are two little pieces of soap and when you read the labels, well, you want breakfast: oatmeal and milk with honey. Apparantly the oatmeal is the "bath bar" and the milk and honey is the "facial bar".
I also discovered that, in a pinch (like when you assume that every hotel gives you a little bottle of shampoo and you can make do with that for 4 days), the facial cleansing gel I use works for hair washing also.
Otherwise the day was pretty uneventful. Orientation was fine - pretty interesting, especially the library overview. The campus is huge and the library is fairly impressive. They have a ton of online resources that I'm sure will come in handy for disseration writing when that comes along. I'd say over the 5 doctoral programs in the CS department there are probably 50 new distance students and in my program about 9. I found a grocery store on the way home (Publix! Yay. I've missed Publix.) and got stuff for dinners since I have a fridge and microwave and everything and water. Cause it's HOT here and water is definitely necessary.
The only other comment I have is that Florida drivers are worse than DC drivers. Seriously. I never thought I would find someplace that was worse, but wow. Impatient and amazingly quick on the horn. So, tomorrow is the first day of classes and I'm curious to see how that goes.
