So...I've now finished Everywhere that Mary Went. At 11:30 last night. When I went to bed (at 9) I thought, "Well, I'll just read another chapter and then go to bed, that should be 9:20 or so, which will be fine." But I couldn't put it down. I kept trying. But I really wanted to know if Ned was the bad guy. Or if it was her boss. Or even her best friend. Or her sister. I suspected them all and I had to know! I would put the book down, turn out the light and lay there for five minutes before groaning and getting up, turning back on the light and promising myself, "Just one more chapter."
Eventually the promise was kept and it was only because I realized what time it was that I forbore reaching for the next book to "Just get it started."
So, if you like mysteries, definitely give Scottoline a try. You hardly even notice the first person after a while, and the characters are likeable. They're all a little flawed (I like little flaws) but not so flawed that they're just as bad (or worse) than people you have to deal with in every day life. Or maybe they are that flawed but they're aware of their flaws and laugh at themselves a little about it too. Whatever it is, they're real and not annoying. I'm all for real and not annoying characters. (That's the quickest way to lose me is to make me start disliking the main character of a book.) I can definitely see myself re-reading these in the future, too, which is nice.
All said: quick, fun read and I'm anxious to get to more.
I'm so glad you enjoyed that. Now you have another 10 or so of hers to look forward to. =)
ReplyDeleteJust last night, at a business dinner, we were all talking about Scottoline. She has many fans apparently. I'll have to read me one of her books soon. I burned out on Grisham and figured Scottoline for just a female version of him. Sounds like a major oversight on my part.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not a female Grisham. Actually pretty much no similarities other than the main character is a lawyer. I got burnt out on him as well - still pretty much am (though I'm marginally interested in a few, Runaway Jury nearly killed me, so we're still on a break.)
ReplyDeleteI agree...Runaway Jury was one of his worst. We were in New Orleans when they were filming the movie though and I enjoyed the movie much more than the book (that's a rare thing for me), but then who can't enjoy Denzel?
ReplyDeleteActually Denzel was in The Pelican Brief. I think John Cusack was in Runaway Jury?
ReplyDeleteScottoline is way better than Grisham - great, fun characters with witty dialogue and intriguing plots. I just finished Devil's Corner and can't wait to get her newest one from the library (it's on hold).
I was thinking Denzel didn't sound right, but since I haven't seen Runaway Jury (b/c the book nearly killed me) I didn't want to contradict. Thought he might've done two - and well, Gwynne was right about one thing - what's not to love about Denzel? :) THough I will say I like John Cusak, he's quirky and generally just fun. So if he's in RJ, then maybe I'll have to give it a shot on the ol DVR.
