Happy Scottish Tartan Day! (This post also titled: Tartan It Up!)

To celebrate Tartan Day (and add some color to my entry for the day) I thought I'd share, briefly, some of the various clans and their tartans from whence I come. Before I get to that, however, I will name one other ancestor from whom I am a direct descendant: Robert the Bruce . I was a little sad watching Braveheart cause it seemed like he was a real putz - but then, it was the story of William Wallace, so perhaps they changed the history a bit (Gasp, horror - Hollywood isn't 100% historically accurate?) in order to make Wallace even more of a hero. Don't know, haven't done the research, but regardless, I will claim the relationship. Especially as it's because we can tie directly back to the Bruce that we can then extend our genealogy back to Charlemagne . And well, that's just cool.

So, without further ado, tartans of a sampling of our Scottish family names:

Bruce

Campbell

Knox

McLeod

Stewart

And last but not least,

Witherspoon

Edited to fix the comment that we could "die" back to the Bruce - while technically accurate, I did mean to type "tie". Ah, typos. Where would we be without 'ye?

  1. So if I'm a Scot and get drunk, am I considered to be on the "tartan sauce"? lgp

  3. Does that mean Jen is related to Reese Witherspoon too?

  4. I saw the Stewart in your posts, Jen - very cool. :)

Gwen, I dunno - I don't think that the Witherspoon and Stewarts actually intermingled in my particular line (who knows what those crazy Scots were up to beyond that though ;) )

Lyndon...what's there to say...other than exactly how much tartan sauce have you had today? :)

Hi, It's my first time visit and what do I find? a distant relative! Very cool! I am also related to Robert the Bruce. I haven't done the research but my Aunty apparently has. You are also right about it being cool if that means we can trace our ancestry back to Charlemange.

My aunt is really into genealogy, and she traced our family back to Charlemagne also.

You and I must be cousins! How cool is that? *grins*
