The Immigration Foo-faru

I've been writing, re-write, discarding, starting over, etc. my thoughts on the immigration issue for several days and not been happy with what I generated as an end result. The following two pretty much sum up my feelings in ways that I haven't been able to get out. So, rather than annoy you with my rambling verbiage, I simply point you to WizBang and Jen (who also references WizBang.)

  1. Thanks for the link.

It is a tough one to pin down.

All I'll say is I'm pro-immigration all the way. My family came here legally 12 years ago, overstayed their visa and became illegal for about three-some years. Eventually, through a lot of hard work and determination, we found a way to become legal again. But our visa expired a few years later and we were faced with having to leave once again. Right at about that time, I won the green card lottery and I am now able to stay here for good. The rest of my family wasn't so lucky, though. They chose to leave because they had other opportunities abroad.

You just can't say you know it if you haven't been through it.

  3. Cinthia - thanks for your input and thoughts, you're right, it's not something I've ever been through personally, though I do have friends who have struggled through it and I know how tough it can be.

  4. This is a tough issue. I think though that if you draw a bright line between legal and illegal, things become clearer. If we're going to have laws, enforce them. If we dont' think the laws are good, change them. Don't enact laws and then look the other way when people break them. Simplistic thinking, I know. My husband is a legal immigrant. He came here many years ago but has had to jump through all sorts of govm't hoops to become a citizen. And complain as we might, I think that's how it should be. We need not close our borders. We can't forget the fact that this country was founded by immigrants and remains a diverse mix of cultures. That's one of the things I love about our country. What irks me are the protesters who are waving Mexican flags. Hellooo? You want to come to America, no? Welcome! Oh, and here's our flag. And here are our rules. Simple. Yeah, right. :-\
