boy.
They think.
I'm not sure what the "they think" part means - though I suppose it means that he wasn't cooperating fully (because as far along as the birthmom is, if he was cooperating I'm thinking they'd've been sure.) Still, they're "reasonably sure". Which basically means it could go either way. But for now, I'm saying boy. Because I prefer using the term "he" to "it" or "the baby".
Last night I went through a baby book and wrote down all the boy names I like (I plan to do this with the girl names, too, just in case). I will run them by Tim and narrow the list down by his responses which always (and inevitably) fall into one of the following two responses:
1) No. Absolutely not. No. Not on your life. Blegh.
2) I have to see the kid.
He is 100% incapable of just answering the question regarding whether he even abstractly likes the name, not tied to a particular person. My sister asked him last night, "Well, if you met someone and they were named this, would you like them?" Tim's response, "Depends on their personality." At this rate, we'll name the kid sometime around his high school graduation. Either that or Tim will look at the baby and we'll end up naming him Winston. Because all newborns look like Winston Churchill. Or an owl. I suppose we could name him Hoot.
So, I will consider any names that receive response #2 to be adequate for further consideration and just go from there.
Also? It was kind of amusing that there was an overwhelming preference for names that mean "God is gracious" or "Gift of God". First off, who knew there were so many names that mean that? Second, I swear it wasn't purposeful. However, in the overall scheme of things, it's fitting and I'm willing to go with it.
Finally, I'm clearly going to need a new category for posts about said child - though I do hereby and forthwith promise that the child will not be the all consuming topic of every thought in my daily life. So, if you have any clever kid-related category titles to offer, let me know!

New category? Ankle Biter perhaps or Tike (or is it Tyke, I'm never sure).
ReplyDeleteAs for a name, Alex will work even if he's not a he. And I think it means God's Gracious Gift. I'm not sure about that but you can always insist that's what it means even if it doesn't.
Oh, and I don't think I said "Congratulations!" yet. This is great news! You must be out of your head with excitement.
I like your current category title...Babies for $25K Alex. And I'm kind of with Tim on the "I have to see him first" line of thinking. So it would be helpful to have several names chosen and available for this purpose. And names that mean God's Gift...what could be more appropriate than that?!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I wrote down all the names we liked, then culled them down to 12 names total. From there I created a table that listed EVERY SINGLE COMBINATION OF THOSE NAMES (144 total). We each took the list and circled the ones we liked, knowing that anything that BOTH of us circled would be on the short list. Surprisingly, only FOUR names were circled by both of us. We then privately ranked the remaining names and quickly got the top three choices. Denis was not a fan of one name once it got to the final list, so we removed it, and basically just chose between the two.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a huge process, but it was actually kind of fun and I LOVE the name we ended up with.
Jim, Ankle Biter is cute...probably not particularly nice, but I might go that way anyway ;) Out of my head - definitely. Getting very little done because all I can think of is how soon January is. And Alexander (or Alexandra) is definitely in the running for a middle name if nothing else.
ReplyDeleteGwynne - I like the current category too, but I was kind of thinking it was more "adoption-y" vs. "mommy-y". You're another of those lookseeers..man.
Jaynee - that's a good technique. I might steal it. :)
My nephew is named Alex...and he's a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteAll babies are gifts from God, hence so many different names that mean they are :-)
ReplyDeleteI like Alex, too. But I prefer old-fashioned names, anyway.
When I read the post title - my first thought was choose something that means Gift from God... I see great minds think alike hehe.
ReplyDeleteUltimately, my mother named our son. =) It was not a name in any list for me, but she kept bringing it up, so to appease I consented to adding it to the list. Turns out Beau liked the idea, too and I was overruled. But it worked out - Jesse is Jesse. =)
ReplyDeleteI've told them all that I get first dibs on the the name for the second child, should there be one.
You'll figure it out.
How about, "They Come with Instructions, Right?"
ReplyDeleteMake sure Mephibosheth is on the list. It's unique. Distinctive. Cool.
Bret, I like that...that has definite potential.
ReplyDeleteMephibosheth...yeah, cause the kids on the playground can't do anything fun with that one. ;)
