So last night I logged into my classroom to see if there was any last minute discussion (today is the last day of the term) or any grades posted, etc. And I was pleased to see that one class has all of its grades posted, so I clicked on the assignments to see how I did. I actually ended up doing better than I expected on my navel contemplation of my learning style and how it impacts my ability to teach and learn online. It was worth 30% of my grade, so I was worried that it wouldn't meet his requirements because, honestly, I just don't buy the "my learning style is such and such so I can do this and that" arguments. It's nice to know how you learn, but if you're not being presented material in your preferred format, you need to learn how to cope.
Anyway, after he did all the grades, the professor sent out an email to the class that mentioned that the grades were done and that he had mostly enjoyed reading the learning style reflections. Then he said this:
"Some of you didn't seem to have spent much time or effort on the reflection and that's represented by your grade. In the future, when an assignment is worth 30% of your final grade, I recommend you really expend effort on it."
Seriously. And these are PhD students who are also educators.
...we wonder why there's a problem with our educational system?
