A Few Random Things

I know, I know, I did a random post on Saturday. But, well, there you have it. I could (and probably should) turn each of these into a post and then I'd actually have something to say for the whole week, but if I don't write them down now, I'm going to forget them, most likely (yes, they're that scintillating.)

Without further ado:

  • We tried out a Sunday school class yesterday. I think we'll be trying a few others as well. There's nothing wrong with this first one but the leader did exercise one of my huge pet peeves and took the Scripture completely out of context to make his point. Now, the point he was making was at least Biblically sound and he had other verses to back it up (so why use the original set of verses? Because it happened to be the next passage in their study of this book of the Bible.), so I don't have a problem with the message. I just really disagree with the idea of using something out of context to back up your point.
  • This is week 4 of planning 2 weeks of menus and then shopping for those items. So far the experiment is going well - if only from the standpoint that it's nice to have a list of meals that I can make when it comes time for dinner. I get very tired of the "What do you want for dinner?" "Food." conversation with Tim. (He's so helpful, that one.) So now I don't have to ask. And I am trying to plan healthier options as well, which is really the only way I'm going to successfully incorporate fresh veggies into our life on a regular basis. I buy them, but if I don't have a plan for how to use them before then, they tend to just sit and sit and sit until they end up going to the trash. Supremely wasteful and irritating.
  • The first 2 weeks of menus came out of a Rachael Ray cookbook. Maybe it's enough to say that there was only 1 recipe I'm willing to use again. Does that adequately convey the high quality of those recipes? Perhaps I'll just add the following: not once were the superlatives "Delish!" or "Yumm-O!" uttered. I wonder if I can list that cookbook on paperback swap?
  • In almost exactly one month I will turn 35. I have a very hard time associating that number to myself. I guess you really are only as old as you feel.
  • I took a nap yesterday, despite my better judgment. I'm pleased to report that I was still actually able to sleep last night. Guess I was tired enough that the nap was warranted. I wish there was a way to know for sure ahead of time...then maybe I could sneak naps a little more often.
  • The kiddo went down at 10:30 and is still up there napping now. I'm guessing this will be his one nap today - though I've basically decided not to sweat it right now because he's not feeling great (I'm really hoping it's just teeth and not another bout of the stomach virus - unfortunately, we've got the watery poo and seriously bad butt rash which is how the last thing started ...we'll see what happens.) Anyway, once he's completely healthy again then maybe I can figure out the new schedule he seems to be trying to instigate.
That's really it - I'll probably have some TV thoughts later in the week, we're falling behind on 24, sadly, but I really liked the first 4 hours. And now, I think I'll scoot upstairs and fold the pile of laundry on my bed, since it's considerably easier to do when the little sock thief isn't toddling around grabbing socks and hiding them from mommy.

  1. Gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of Rachel Ray. Ish. And while I enjoy watching Giada de Laurentis, can't say that I'm a huge fan of her stuff. Bobby Flay isn't bad.

  2. I can't watch Rachael Ray - she drives me insane...but I had used a few of her recipes before and had reasonably good results. Thus the cookbook. Note to self: stick to printing off FoodNetwork.com. :) I like Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) the most - and her recipes are all delightful.

  3. I've found that Robin Miller's recipes are better than you'd expect from her show. I've made a few of her things and we liked them.

  4. I'm with you on Rachel Ray...I've got one of her books also and usually, it disappoints. I got a cookbook for Christmas that I love so far (along the lines of Rachel in that it's "fast" food)...Nigella Express. I haven't watched her show, but my husband plans to start (he drools over her picture on the cover of the book ;-).

  5. I've seen Nigella a few times - she is awfully pretty. :) Can't comment on her food as I haven't tried it - but I may go look for a few online at your recommendation, Gwynne. As for fast...I've never yet managed under 50 minutes for one of Ray's "30 minute" meals.
