Miscellaneous Monday

I know, I know.

Still:

  • We had everyone from my side of the family over on Saturday for a Mother's Day/mom's birthday extravaganza. It was lots of fun, the kiddo was charming (vs. shrieking like an eel about to feast on human flesh, which has been common of late. Thank you molars.)
  • I made the first round of ribs for the season. Gosh those are yummy. I will probably make them more often this summer now that the little one can entertain himself during the prep - it was a bit of a challenge last summer as I have a thing about working with raw pork and/or a hot stove with a baby in my arms/strapped to me. Go figure.
  • The sand and water table has arrived! It's a big hit - and quite messy. And seriously, what is it about boys and eating sand? His little butt got nicely exfoliated today as I changed his first diaper.
  • We also got him a splashy pool type thing that was slightly less of a hit. I think this is partially owing to the fact that it was a bit cool - pleasant, but not in the "gosh I need a pool" sense. Also partially owing to the fact that our yard is not what one could term "flat" really anywhere, so the water kind of runs out one side. We'll figure something out for next time.
  • If you look at the picture of the splashy pool thing, you might, like me, figure it's fairly large. But in actuality, those children are tiny. I can't really fathom how more than two kids would play in it simultaneously. And the slide? You hold our petite child at the top and his toes are already at the bottom. It's still fun though.
  • I haven't yet seen the winner of the Amazing Race. We'll watch tonight and I'm trying (very hard...though right now it's an uphill battle) not to go peek.
  • I'm hoping the male contestant wins Hell's Kitchen.
  • I injured the middle finger of my right hand and am having a hard time resisting showing it to people in a certain manner. I'm also fairly certain that I'm going to lose the fingernail.
  • Do you have any idea how often you bang your middle finger without realizing it? Neither did I.
  • The Beth-Reduction-Program has begun. Pray for me.
  • We got the paperwork from our attorney in our email on Saturday so...we can start gearing up for number 2. It's normal to be half terrified and half excited, right?
  • I got some feedback from my dissertation committee. I've made a lot of the changes already - and there's nothing huge (no "I don't really see a dissertation in here" comments like last time, at least) - but I do wish they'd make up their minds about where they want the research questions. I've moved them from chapter 1 to chapter 3 to chapter 1 to chapter 3 more times than I can count. They want them in chapter 1 again now. I'm gonna ask if I can put them in both places and be done.
I'm going to try to be better about some regularity around here again. I am! We'll see how it goes.

  1. True story: My little brother cut his middle finger with an exacto knife when he was 12 or 13 years old (that would make me 14 or 15). He needed stitches. When he got back from the hospital he stood at the top of the basement stairs and yelled down to me. I walked over and saw him standing at the top of the steps with his wrapped finger raised. "Hey Jim!" he yelled. "Doctor told me to keep it elevated!"

Sorry to hear about your trauma.

I hope and will pray that the reduction goes well (I assume we're not talking about sauce making in a cooking class you're taking).

  2. Your brother sounds like a fun younger brother. Then again, younger siblings are the best. (Though perhaps I'm biased.:) )

I wish it was sauce. But no, it's the less exciting process of becoming a shadow of my former self. Prayers appreciated.

  3. Can we blame the crankiness on the Moeller's instead of the molars? I'm sure Joy would appreciate that :)

  4. I am soooo with you on the molars. Last weekend was horrible. We lived from one Motrin dose to the next. But now, I think we're over the worst of it (knock wood).

Fair warning--the jump from one child to 2 children is huge. But once you figure out the new routine, you can relax, knowing that you've done this before. They won't break. And they will love you as much as you love them. :) Fingers crossed and many prayers for both the potential of child #2 and for the reduction!

  5. If there is anything I can do to help with the reduction process on top of pray - let me know! I'd love to be able to give back to the people who helped/are helping me.

  6. I can imagine feeling both terrified and excited with all of the usual struggles of adoption combined now with the addition of a 2nd child when you've got an active toddler on your hands. You have my prayers on all fronts. :-)

The children in the Banzai pool thingy look like they've been photoshopped into the picture. ;-)
