With hurricane Florence barrelling toward the east coast, I've spent entirely too much time this week trying to get prepared (in so far as we need to where we are -- we were never in the direct path.) Of course, how much preparation to do has been up in the air. On Monday, it looked like it was headed for the NC/VA border area and so we could expect upwards of 10 inches of rain. On our already sodden ground. There would be flooding in places and probably some trees that simply couldn't stay upright in the loose muck.
Would we lose power? I found the flashlights and batteries. We have food and water. We we're probably good.
But since then, the dang predictions keep moving around. South. North. Back to the South. Hit in the south then go straight west. No, it'll turn north after it hits.
No. One. Has. Any. Clue.
That is my takeaway. I have long called them weather guessers, around here at least they seem to be wrong more than they're right.
That said, if Florence is headed your way - or might be (which basically means you live in the mid Atlantic at this point), be sure to listen to your local authorities. And seriously, if you're told to evacuate, do it. If it's suggested, do it.
Beyond that? If you're watching and waiting, try to avoid stirring up panic. There are helpful ways to encourage people to prepare and there are panic inducing ones. Don't let previous experiences with storms make you the latter. It's counter productive (I have a handful of people on ye olde FB who are what I consider panic mongers right now. Don't be Chicken Little.)
