I recently finished Closer Than Your Skin: Unwrapping the Mystery of Intimacy With God. This is an enjoyable book full of stories of how the author sought and found a deeper, conversational relationship with God. She tells the story of her Christianity, from conversion and the blush of first love to slipping into the legalism of busy-Christianity (being Martha, she calls it), to the dejection and questioning that came as a result of her husband's infidelity, to the healing and restoration and closer relationship that culminated in the development of a prayer ministry for others (one that sounds like it is essentially a Theophostic Prayer ministry.)
Throughout the book, the author provides thoughts and simple suggestions of how others can start their own journey to this conversational, intimate relationship with God - though it is by no means a "how to" manual. In fact (and rightly so, I think), the author warns against those who offer "easy" how-tos and also gives good guidance for testing whether a word you receive is truly from God, cautioning against the extremes that seem to be pervasive in the church (the extremes being those who find signs from God in every tick of the clock to those who say God no longer speaks to us individually.)
The book was interesting and thought provoking as well as entertaining and encouraging.
