Our Memorial Day Weekend Project

You may recall a while ago, hubby got it in his head to tear down a wall in the basement and do some reconfiguring. (Digging for that link, wow, February. It doesn't feel like it was that long ago. Tempus fugit and so forth.)

Well, the wall came down, another two walls got moved, some new drywall was applied, a big hole was cut along one side of the stairs to open up the stairwell, and then it kind of sat. There was mudding and taping and sanding going on - but no one really enjoys that part of the drywall work and there was no rush because the kids were using the space just fine in its semi-finished state and, well time. Plus we had to figure out what to do about the floor.

Originally, that side the basement was in two parts. The part that later became the playroom originally started as a workshop for hubby. When it was in workshop mode, we left the floor concrete (because workshop.) When we we converted it to a playroom, we put down laminate flooring. We had already put laminate in the office part when we first finished the basement.

Did they still make the laminate we used in the office when we got around to putting down laminate in the playroom? No. No they did not. This didn't matter, overly, because there was a wall separating the spaces.

Then we took down the wall. And there was a strip of concrete where there used to be wall. And then we moved wall and there was more concrete. And...what to do? Nobody really wanted to re-do the whole space just to have matching floor. So hubby dug around in the shed and found that there were some spare pieces from one set of flooring and with some creative magic that involved stealing from one end of the room where the floors would join to fill in one spot and then lay down the spare in the new gap and...floor. No more concrete. They are two different looks but...eh. No one cares.

So all that's left is to paint. And that is our weekend project.

Today we got the priming done and then the stairwell and ceiling. Tomorrow, the walls! (After church and lunch out with the extended family as our sole nod to any sort of Memorial Day get together.)

I love painting.

I also kind of hate it.
