It's not been a good year for puppies in our family. This morning at 6:30 as I was taking Joshua downstairs for his morning bottle, the phone started ringing. Phone calls at 6:30 a.m. are rarely a good thing. It was my dad, letting me know that he'd gone to get his dog, Duke, up this morning and found that he'd passed away. There was very little warning - Duke had been a little sick yesterday, but stomach ailments are pretty common among Shelties and so it's something you watch, but generally don't fret over. Especially when it's just one day.
Duke was a special dog - I've never met a more sweet tempered, gentle dog as he was. We got him from relatives of a friend of ours - that couple was going through a bitter divorce where there had been abuse of not only Duke but the woman and her child as well. The woman would have taken the dog, but her son was turning out to be allergic and they couldn't bear to put him down for no reason. At the time, my sister had been considering getting another dog as a companion to hers, so we agreed to take Duke, then about 1, and if they didn't get along, daddy would keep him.
While Prince and Duke got along fairly well, it seemed best that he live with mom and dad, and honestly, Duke chose daddy the instant they met. He followed daddy around and curled all 50 pounds of him into his lap whenever possible. He's going to be missed so acutely.

ReplyDelete(psst--check your blog title. I think you meant angels.)
Nope - it's a flight of angles - mostly 90 degree, but a few 45s thrown in there just for fun. Sorry - Jerome is clearly taking his toll. :P
ReplyDeleteHows your dad going?
ReplyDeletePeace and comfort to all of you. I know Duke will be missed...but think of how he's playing up there with Jesus!
