The Eyes Have It

Today, youngest started vision therapy.

I think I've talked about the issues with his eyes previously. Long story short (just in case), he struggles with reading. Focusing. And, after a little fiddling this way and that, we've sussed out that it's not really a clarity issue (he has some corrective lenses in there - but his eyes are 20/25, so that's not really off the charts of amazing) but a development issue.

Essentially, his eyes don't work together. They don't focus together.

Vision therapy is supposed to help this.

Of course, insurance considers it experimental (why wouldn't they? just because it's helpful and everything. Oh wait.) But after amazingly little fussing, we were able to get them to cover 12 of the 48 sessions he needs "in network." (Of course all that actually does is pay down our ridiculous in network deductible, but given that that's lower than the out of network one, I guess it's better than nothing?)

Today, he had his first session. It was, essentially, an introduction to the therapist he'll be working with and a demonstration of the initial exercises they'll be focusing on. There's homework (yay?). But on the positive side of things, he had fun, the therapist seems like someone who will be good with him (youngest has a fascinating blend of stubbornness and an high inability to sit still - therapist dude just rolled with it, redirecting as needed, no visible frustration. Definite points for that.)

I guess we'll see how it goes, but as of this moment I am cautiously optimistic that maybe, just maybe, we're on our way toward unraveling some of the hiccups.

Fingers crossed.
